How do I know if my mole is cancerous?
There are many different kinds of moles or nevi. Moles are formed when skin cells grow in a cluster. These skin cells are called melanocytes, which give its skin color. The 4 most common types of moles are dysplastic nevi, congenital moles, acquired nevi, and spitz nevi.
Dysplastic nevi are typically referred to as an abnormal mole. Characteristics that make a mole abnormal include being larger in size, having uneven edges, or moles that grow over time. This is one of the common types of moles that can transform into melanoma.
Congenital moles are moles you were born with and are normal.
Acquired nevi are moles you were not born with. Having over 50 of these can put you at greater risk for melanoma.
Spitz Nevi are the least common type of moles. These moles are often raised, pink, and can be dome shaped. Sometimes these moles have different colors within the mole such as black and brown. These are often tough to distinguish from melanoma without a biopsy.
